Police: W.Va. fugitive found dead in Maine

1 min read

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) – Police in Waterville, Maine, say a man whose body was found Jan. 11 was a fugitive who disappeared nine years ago during his trial for firearms and drug violations in West Virginia.

Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey said Friday the body of 59-year-old Richard Lawson was identified through fingerprints. He says an autopsy determined he died from heart disease.

Massey told WZON-AM it appears Lawson collapsed shortly after getting off a bus.

He said Lawson was on trial on firearms and drug charges when he disappeared in 2004. He said Lawson had family in Maine but they said they hadn’t heard from him for 15 years.
