Engine leak leads police to DUI suspect
Canonsburg police followed a trail of engine fluids to find one drunken driving suspect Monday, while another suspected intoxicated motorist almost crashed in front of officers the previous day.
The suspected driver in Monday’s crash, Collin Westcott, 30, of 219 E. Grant St., Houston, was found at his home after police followed a trail of oil and antifreeze from the scene where wires, a utility pole and two business signs were knocked down in the 200 block of West Pike Street shortly before 4 a.m.
The trail continued west on Pike to McNary Street and Grant. Police said they found a damaged pickup truck in the driveway at 219 E. Grant.
Westcott’s blood-alcohol content was more than 1 1/2 times the 0.08 percent limit presumed for intoxication, police said. He will be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to report a crash and leaving the scene of a crash.
The accident closed that section of Pike until repairs could be made to the downed pole and wires.
Canonsburg police said Evan M. Walp, 23, of 438 Blaine Ave., Canonsburg, had a BAC more than three times the 0.08 percent limit when he nearly struck several utility poles on West Pike Saturday.
Walp was first spotted driving east at a high speed without his vehicle’s headlights turned on, police said. Police said he crossed into the westbound lane, where he almost hit the poles before he was stopped.
He faces DUI charges, police said.
