Boy, 5, crashes car into house in Heidelberg

1 min read

HEIDELBERG (AP) – Police have filed misdemeanor charges after a 5-year-old boy took his grandmother’s car keys and then drove the vehicle through some hedges and into a neighbor’s house.

Heidelberg police Chief Vernon Barkley says the boy was more scared of getting punished than anything else and wasn’t badly injured. He was taken to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as a precaution after the crash, which happened about 9 a.m. Monday.

Barkley says the boy’s mother and grandmother were charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. He says they weren’t keeping an eye on the boy and didn’t know he had driven off.

Barkley says the women blamed the child’s father for the boy’s interest in driving.

The boy drove the car about a half block before crashing.
