WAYNESBURG – Southwest Regional Medical Center employees and local emergency responders successfully completed an emergency drill to better prepare in the event of a true disaster.

The drill was conducted to test evacuation and patient influx procedures at SRMC, as well as the ability of the facility to handle patients contaminated with hazardous materials and preparing emergency responders to effectively respond to the evacuation of the hospital during a natural disaster.

The full scale drill included Greene County Emergency Management Agency, EMS Southwest, Waynesburg Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company, West Virginia University Medical Center and Metropolitan Medical Response System-PA Region 13.

“This process enabled us to identify opportunities for process improvement both internally and among key external partners,” said Mike Onusko, SRMC ethics and corporate compliance officer. “In the event of a true emergency, it is imperative that all entities involved understand how they impact each other. Drills enable us to work through potential barriers now so we can provide the highest level of care and service for our community later,” he said.
