Teens injured in early morning crash outside mall
Three teenagers were seriously injured Monday morning when their car crashed into a light pole near Macy’s at Washington Crown Center.
North Franklin Township police received a report about 3:59 a.m. of a car into the light pole just off a sharp bend in the trafficway at the mall.
Two teens, a boy and a girl, were found inside the car. Township police Sgt. Dean Urbanic said another girl who apparently had been inside the vehicle was located later at Washington Hospital’s emergency room. Urbanic said it is unclear if she was ejected from the car or how she arrived at the hospital.
North Franklin fire Chief David Bane said cleaning crews from Hollywood Theaters discovered the wreckage as they arrived at work Monday.
Bane said the boy was quickly removed from the wreckage. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to free the girl, who was driving the car. Bane said emergency workers had to spread the dashboard to remove her from the vehicle.
Bane said it is unclear when the crash happened. He said the windows had fogged up, indicating that some time had passed before the wreckage was discovered.
All three teens were flown to Children’s Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh. The driver was flown from the site of the accident, while the other teens were flown from Washington Hospital. Information on their names or conditions was not immediately available as police continue their investigation.
Washington firefighters also assisted.
