Creator of hospitals’ Rosenbaum House dies

1 min read

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The namesake of the Rosenbaum Family House at West Virginia University Hospitals has died.

Hilda Rosenbaum was 87. She died Thursday at home in Morgantown, where she helped build a low-cost home away from home for the families of patients.

As a young mother from Uniontown, in the 1950s, Rosenbaum traveled widely to get care for her daughter. She often slept on chairs because she couldn’t afford a room.

The Dominion Post says her daughter died of cystic fibrosis at age 6 and she later lost a son.

As a retired clothing store owner later in life, Rosenbaum helped fund the 23-room, six-apartment house next to Ruby Memorial Hospital. It charges just $15 a night.

Dering-Henson Funeral Home hosts a viewing Saturday. Private burial is Sunday in Westover.
