STATE COLLEGE (AP) – A fire has destroyed a 19-unit apartment building near the Penn State University campus in State College, leaving about 40 people without a home.

Alpha Fire Company Chief Jeff Martin says firefighters rescued two people from a balcony during the fire, which began about 8 p.m. Thursday. There were no injuries and all residents are accounted for.

Officials say about 40 firefighters fought the blaze, which is still being investigated.

Many of those displaced were Penn State graduate students or researchers. Residents of at least 12 of the units were connected with the university and were offered temporary housing in campus dormitories.

The Red Cross is helping the families involved with food, shelter and clothing.
