Apparent gas explosion levels home

1 min read

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Police say a blast that leveled a northeastern Philadelphia home appears to have been caused by a gas explosion.

A police spokeswoman says most residents evacuated after the 12:20 p.m. Saturday blast in the Wissinoming section of the city are being allowed to return, with the exception of homes on either side of the destroyed one-story structure.

But she says the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority transit system has been shut down in the area.

Police initially reported two minor injuries but fire officials said there were no reports of injuries.

Rescue workers have been looking through the debris to make sure no one was inside at the time of the blast.

Residents on the block told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the home was vacant and up for sale.
