State police shoot, kill former deputy

1 min read

HOMER CITY (AP) – A former sheriff’s deputy in Western Pennsylvania has been shot and killed by Pennsylvania State Police.

Police spokesman John Matchik says officers were dispatched to a home near Homer City around midnight on a domestic dispute call. That’s about 50 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Gary Wissinger allegedly came outside with a handgun and made aggressive movements toward police. Matchik says at least one trooper opened fire and Wissinger went back inside the home. He was pronounced dead about 6 a.m. Monday, according to the Indiana County coroner’s office. Wissinger’s wife was in the house at the time but was unharmed.

The troopers involved in the shooting have been put on leave, which is standard procedure.

State police and the Indiana County district attorney’s office are investigating.
