Area high schools plan alumni football game
Football in July? No, it is not NFL time but Mapletown/Waynesburg Central alumni time.
Alumni from both schools will be participating in a football game at Mapletown High School at 7:30 p.m. July 19.
Forty to 50 Mapletown and Waynesburg Central graduates ranging in ages from 18 to 47 will be participating in this football game.
Zach Novak, a Mapletown High School alumnus, began organizing the event after reminiscing about his high school days.
“The reason I set this whole thing up was because I wanted the opportunity to step on the field one last time, and I knew others felt that way as well,” said Novak.
The experience will be new for all players. The two schools were in different classifications and the players never opposed each other on the field during their high school careers.
“The best thing about this game is that I’m playing with the guys I looked up to when I was little, along with the kids I have coached the last two years at the high school,” said Mapletown player Wes Loring, who also coaches and teaches at Mapletown. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all of us.”
Joe Spiker will be coaching the Mapletown team while the Waynesburg team will not have a designated coach.
Cost for admission is $10. Children under 5 are free. People are encouraged to buy tickets in advance even though tickets will be sold at the gate.
Half of the money raised by the pre sale tickets will benefit the Mapletown High School Varsity Boosters.
“Organizing an event like the alumni game gives us a chance to bring the community together and raise money for our varsity sports here at Mapletown High School,” said Bobbi Antill of the Varsity Boosters.
Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at The Grocery Bag in Greensboro, the Bobtown Market in Bobtown and through Loring by calling 724-963-9373 or through email at loringw55@hotmail.com.
