2 min read

WAYNESBURG – Greene County commissioners Thursday awarded four contracts for a new food preparation facility at the Greene County Prison – a project costing nearly $600,000.

The general construction contract was awarded to Allegheny Restoration Builders Inc. in the amount of $303,940. Others bidding on general construction were Liokareas LLC, $415,000; Lone Pine Construction, $371,000; Plavchak Construction, $379,800; and Waller Corp., $369,400.

The plumbing contract went to JB Mechanical Inc. in the amount of $80,600. The other plumbing bidder was Wayne Crowe Inc., at $141,200.

The HVAC contact was awarded to H.J. Thomas Inc. in the amount of $48,890. Other bidders were JB Mechanical, $52,600, and K-Mac Inc., $69,961.

Electrical construction was awarded to Allegheny City Electric Inc. in the amount of $159,000. They were the only bidder.

It became necessary to build a new kitchen at the jail when the county’s lease with the Corner Cupboard Food Bank expired. Up to that point county and jail personnel used the food banks’ kitchen facilities to prepare food for jail inmates.

The commissioners approved an additional $1,200 cost to Fiske and Sons Inc. for removing the statue of Gen. Nathanael Greene from atop the county courthouse. The added cost was for Fiske to rent and haul in a different size crane to place on Church Street instead of High Street.

In other businesses, the commissioners:

• Approved contracts with TMP Roofing for $5,400 for work on the courthouse roof and $2,425 for work on the Ben Franklin Franklin Building.

• Appointed Joe Simatic to the Industrial Development Authority board of directors; Elizabeth Kennedy to the Greene County Housing Authority board of directors; Fred Clark Jr., to the Tax Abatement board of directors; and Allison Blaker to the Humane Society, replacing Brad Hartman, who resigned.

During a salary board following the commissioners’ meeting, Stacey Courtwright was hired as the new administrator for Children and Youth Services at a salary of $45,582. The position has been vacant since the former director resigned to take the similar position in Washington County.

In other business, the salary board:

• Hired two regular full-time caseworkers in CYS at $18.16 an hour. They were Contessa Wilson and Melissa Ewart.

• Hired Alexis Popielarcheck as a department clerk in the elections office at a rate of $11.87 an hour.

• Hired Crystal Simmons as a grants coordinator with the office of economic development at a rate of $15 an hour.
