John D. Sheehan, chief financial officer at Mylan, the Southpointe-based global pharmaceutical corporation, has been named 2014 campaign chairman for United Way of Washington County’s annual campaign. Sheehan succeeds John Applegath, senior vice president at Range Resources, who served as 2013 campaign chairman. The 2013 Campaign raised $1,212,122 in Washington County.

With nearly 30 years of professional experience in global finance, Sheehan joined Mylan in 2010 as executive vice president and chief financial officer. “I am honored to have been selected as Washington County campaign chairman,” Sheehan said. “Increasing awareness of the good work United Way does for our community is my primary objective for this year’s campaign. Funding programs and services that address education, financial stability and improved health are critical aspects of a vital community, and I would like to help educate and re-educate Washington County on the outstanding benefits that United Way provides. I am also proud to represent Mylan in this capacity as we have a long history of supporting the communities in which we operate.”

For the 2013 United Way campaign, Mylan’s campaign committee, led by Darlene Reed, made a concerted effort to improve their United Way Campaign performance. They added special events, raffles, employee meetings and $5 jeans days to generate excitement in the workplace. They set out to better educate employees as to the work of United Way locally, including having employees serve as volunteers on the community impact panels that determine United Way funding. Their efforts paid off, landing Mylan in the “Top 5 Campaigns” in Washington County for the first time.

“Mylan and its employees have been extremely supportive of United Way, both in Washington County and at their West Virginia location,” said United Way President Barbara Murphy. “They are committed to improving conditions for people in Washington County. Giving back to the communities where they live and work is a core value at Mylan, and their support will impact all the community charities that depend on United Way for funding.”
