NY man drowns in eastern Pa. river
DELAWARE WATER GAP (AP) – Officials said the body of a New York man was recovered from the Delaware River in an eastern Pennsylvania park, the second drowning in the park in less than two weeks.
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area said National Park Service boat operators found the body of 51-year-old Juan Roberto Salomon Delacruz of Brooklyn late Saturday afternoon.
Officials said he was found about 20 yards from the New Jersey shore and pronounced dead at the scene near Kittatinny Point, N.J., by the Morris County medical examiner.
Park officials said the victim had been swimming and picnicking with family members.
Officials warn the river may appear calm but has strong currents, sharp drop-offs and underwater obstacles.
A 9-year-old Pike County boy drowned July 8 while fishing in the park, officials said.
Authorities said Michael Maxwell of Bushkill lost his footing on the embankment just downstream from the Bushkill Access at the recreation area and slipped into the current. Superintendent John Donahue said family members and a passing boater tried unsuccessfully to rescue him.
He wasn’t wearing life jacket, and officials again urged anyone on or near the river to wear a personal flotation device.
