Train derails near Clarksville

1 min read

CLARKSVILLE – Six cars on a Norfolk Southern train hauling stone and materials for track maintenance derailed Tuesday evening just east of Clarksville.

The derailment about 8:30 p.m. resulted in three of the six cars spilling their loads: Two hauling stone and the third hauling a generator, said David Pidgeon, Norfolk Southern spokesman.

About three gallons of diesel fuel from the generator was spilled, he said. The Washington County Emergency Management Agency was called and the fuel was cleaned up using absorbent materials, he said. The spill did not impact any waterways.

Pidgeon said the train, referred to as a “ballast” train, had two locomotives and 56 loaded cars. The six cars that derailed were at the end of the train.

The cars were placed back on the rail Wednesday morning. Crews were making repairs to the rails and expected to reopen the line by 8 p.m. Wednesday, Pidgeon said. The cause of the derailment is being investigated.
