Ohio man sentenced in case involving false charity
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said a man who solicited money he falsely claimed would go to help veterans has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison.
DeWine said Monday that John Hargrove targeted elderly people when raising money for the fraudulent Ohio Veterans Source charity that Hargrove falsely said would help local veterans. The attorney general says Hargove used the money for himself.
DeWine said Hargrove was sentenced Friday in Columbus on convictions for single counts of prohibited acts and practices and theft. Hargrove also must repay more than $2,000.
DeWine said Hargrove was convicted in 2006 and served 18 months in prison for illegally soliciting more than $8,000 allegedly to benefit the same fraudulent charity.
Hargrove’s attorney declined to comment.
