Amateur radio operators to hold workshop
Amateur radio operators from Washington County will be on hand to offer their expertise at the South Strabane Township No. 1 fire hall pavilion on East Maiden Street this weekend.
Members of the Washington Amateur Communications organization will broadcast from noon Saturday until noon Sunday.
The public is invited to visit Saturday afternoon to see demonstrations on how to become a ham radio operator.
The demonstration is part of Amateur Radio Week, a nationwide initiative to showcase the importance of ham radio in the age of the smart phone. More than 35,000 operators took part in last year’s event.
WAMCO also will offer classes on ham radio at the South Strabane fire hall on Tuesday nights beginning July 16.
Emergency operations such as regional 911 centers, the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency use the frequency to communicate and the International Space Station is equipped to broadcast in the ham spectrum. There are more than 400 licensed amateur operators in Washington County. For more information, visit www. wamco.org.
