Bail set for Wind Ridge man shot by father
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a Wind Ridge man who was shot in the leg June 23 by his father, John W. Riley.
Richard John Riley, 38, of 342 Gunn Hill Road, allegedly threatened to kill his father and was coming at him when John Riley shot him in the leg to protect himself, according to police.
Richard Riley arrived at his father’s residence following a domestic dispute with his wife, Kristy Riley, the complaint said. Kristy Riley told police her husband became angry with her for not doing the laundry and had kicked her, causing her to fall into a cabinet, injuring her arm. She said she then fled with her children to her father-in-law’s house.
John Riley told police his son demanded to see his children and threatened to kill him if he didn’t let him see them. He said he was afraid of his son from past physical attacks and retrieved a .22 caliber revolver from his home. After being told to stay back, John Riley shot his son in the leg when his son came at him. According to the criminal complaint, Richard Riley still continued to advance toward his father who fired a second shot into the ground in front of his son, who then fled.
Richard Riley is free on $25,000 unsecured bond after a preliminary arraignment Thursday before Greene County Magisterial District Judge Lee Watson. Watson ordered Riley to have no contact with his wife, Kristy Riley, or their children. His preliminary hearing is slated for 3:15 p.m. Monday before Watson.
