HARRISBURG (AP) — A newspaper says nearly 5,000 people on Pennsylvania’s state payroll earned at least $100,000 last year, and more than a third work for the 14 state-owned universities.

The Patriot-News in Harrisburg reported Monday that the top 10 earners include Angelo Armenti, the fired president of California University, who ranked first at $367,449, and former State System of Higher Education Chancellor John Cavanaugh at $324,397.

The newspaper says Gov. Tom Corbett ranks 190th on the top earners list, receiving $178,033 in 2012.

The list of tax-paid employees earning at least $100,000 more than quadrupled from 2002, when there were 1,176 people in that category.

The earnings of some people on the list were inflated by severance pay or payouts for unused leave.
