A banner effort

Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce is determined to again honor its hometown servicemen with vinyl banners hung on poles along the borough’s main thoroughfares.

“We’ve been trying to pick up the loose ends” since there is no longer a Main Street manager or the Our Town Cooperative, said Anita Brecosky, chamber executive administrator.

In October, Nadeen Steffey left her position as Main Street manager after having instituted well-received events and programs during her five-year tenure. The borough did not fill the position.

It was up to other organizations, in this case the chamber, to take over the programs, or they would no longer be offered.

“We didn’t want to the community to lose these events,” said Brecosky.

The Hometown Hero banners were first offered last spring. The banners feature the serviceman’s name, rank and photo. They are then hung in May prior to Memorial Day and remain on display through Labor Day.

So far this year, 52 banners have either been ordered or will be rehung by the chamber. Brecosky said there’s still room for plenty more, but orders must be submitted by April 15 to ensure placement by Memorial Day weekend.

Brecosky said the chamber has decided to lower the cost of the banners.

A one-sided banner will now cost $150 instead of $175, and a two-sided one is $200 instead of $300.

Rehanging fees also have been reduced. The cost of rehanging a one-sided banner is $55. The cost is $75 for a double-sided banner. Refunds will be issued to people who already have ordered their banners at the higher prices.

“We didn’t want to put an undue burden on military families,” Brecosky explained.
