Centerville woman guilty of reckless burning

1 min read

A Centerville woman accused of trying to burn down the home of her late mother pleaded guilty in Washington County court to a charge of reckless burning.

Cheryl Sabatula, 55, of 200 Reliance Ave., was sentenced to 9 to 23 months in jail. Judge Katherine Emery also banned her from lottery gambling and casinos in both Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and ordered her to enroll in Gamblers Anonymous.

Two counts of arson, filed against Sabatula in connection with a Feb. 29, 2012, fire at the home of Georgene Huey, 216 Diamond Ave., Centerville, were dismissed. Huey died in December.

A man delivering heating oil discovered a fire in an unfinished room attached to Huey’s four-room house. Using a fire extinguisher he had in his truck, he put out the flames before firefighters arrived. An arson investigator found that four separate fires had been burning inside the home.
