Diocese: Harrisburg bishop died of heart attack

HARRISBURG (AP) – Diocese of Harrisburg officials say Bishop Joseph McFadden died of a heart attack last week after suddenly falling ill while attending a meeting of the Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania.

McFadden died unexpectedly Thursday morning at a hospital near Philadelphia. Officials say McFadden awoke feeling ill and was taken to a hospital. He was 65 years old.

Church officials say McFadden’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday following several days of services.

His body was received at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg on Sunday night and will lie in state until Tuesday evening.

The funeral will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Harrisburg. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. All services are open to the public.

McFadden was installed as the 10th bishop of Harrisburg in August 2010.
