Canton bridge project advances
Washington County commissioners last week approved an additional $28,337 supplement to the contract with SAI Consulting Engineers to meet requirements by the Pennslvania Department of Transportation for the replacement of the Weirich Avenue Bridge.
GAI Engineers were awarded a $96,094 contract for construction inspection.
PennDOT will open construction bids June 6, with work to begin in the fall. A completion date is expected to be in 2014. All costs are to be borne by state taxpayers.
The county-owned bridge over Chartiers Creek has been closed since June 2006 due to cleanup of low-level radiation. Residents and emergency crews have had to use a winding two-mile detour around the bridge since then.
Chevron Corp. acquired the Molycorp property in Canton Township near Interstate 70 several years ago.
The project will be monitored for thorium, a by-product of the manufacture of molybdenum.
