New Washington police chief named

Chris Luppino, a sergeant in the Washington police department, today was named the city’s new police chief. Mayor Brenda Davis held a hastily called press conference to make the announcement.

Luppino takes over for Robert Wilson, who suddenly retired last week while serving as acting chief. Wilson had taken over for Robert Lemons Jr., who resigned as chief in January after a little more than a year to return to his rank of lieutenant. The turnover in leadership came amid claims at last week’s City Council meeting that Mayor Brenda Davis was micromanaging the department and calls for her to be removed from overseeing it.

Luppino is an 18-year member of the police force, and has been a sergeant for 12 years.
