Bus driver charged with homicide in train crash
EVANS CITY, Pa. (AP) — Police have filed homicide and other charges against a western Pennsylvania bus driver who was involved in a crash with a train that killed two people and injured several others.
Authorities say surveillance video shows that 59-year-old Frank B. Schaffner drove through a fog-shrouded railroad crossing in April without stopping. Schaffner, of Butler Township, was charged Thursday with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, and other offenses.
The small bus transit bus for senior citizens and people with disabilities was hit by a freight train at an unmarked crossing about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.
Mike Pawk, Schaffner’s attorney, says he hasn’t been able to discuss the charges with his client yet.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 14.
