Events slated for Memorial Day
The Greene County Department of Veterans Affairs announced a schedule of services for Memorial Day
• The Brooks-Crago American Legion Post No. 816 of Rices Landing will hold a parade at 2 p.m. that will begin at the post home and proceed to the honor roll between the Hewitt Cemetery and Hewitt Presbyterian Church.
Participants will include the Jefferson-Morgan High School band, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from Rices Landing and the Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Department.
Thomas Shumaker, western vice commander for the Department of Pennsylvania American Legion, will serve as the speaker for the ceremonies. Invocation will be presented by the Rev. Geoff Roch of Hewitt Presbyterian Church. An honor guard and firing squad will participate in the ceremony.
Following this service, another service will be held at the Crucible Cemetery Honor Roll.
The American Legion invites everyone to the post home following the service where the auxiliary will provided a light snack.
• The James R. Maxon American Legion Post No. 992 of Mt. Morris will hold services at 11:30 a.m. at the Kiger Cemetery and at 11:45 a.m. at Claughton Chapel Cemetery. An honor guard and firing squad will participate in the services.
The Carmichaels Honor Guard, which includes the Carmichaels American Legion Post No. 400, Carmichaels VFW Post No. 3491, Greensboro VFW Post No. 6303 and Bobtown VFW Post No. 5567, will have the following services:
• At noon, services will be held at the Garards Fort Cemetery with Waynesburg police Chief Tim Hawfield as speaker. An honor guard and firing squad will participate in the ceremony.
• At 1 p.m., a service will be held at the Greensboro VFW Honor Roll with state Rep. Pam Snyder as the speaker. An honor guard and firing squad will participate in the ceremony.
The Carmichaels Honor Guard will participate in the following services:
• At 10 a.m., services will be held at the Nemacolin Honor Roll.
• At 11 a.m., services will be held at the Crucible Honor Roll. State Rep. Pam Snyder; Dalene Watson, U.S. Air Force, retired, and veterans affairs director for the County of Greene; and U.S. Army Reserve Lt. Colonel Frank Pecjak will serve as the speakers for the service. Speakers may be subject to change.
• At 11:45 a.m., a parade will be held from the American Legion Post No. 400 to the Laurel Point Cemetery. Frank Ricco and the American Legion Post Band will perform.
• At noon, services will be held at the Laurel Point Cemetery with Kit Watson, adjutant at Pennsylvania American Legion, speaking. Invocation will be presented by the Rev. Reagan Fike of First Christian Church of Carmichaels.
• At 1 p.m., a luncheon will be provided at the Carmichaels VFW Post No. 3491.
Waynesburg VFW Post No. 4793 will hold services:
• At 11 a.m., a service will be at the post home on Lincoln Street with David Szarell, one-star general, as speaker. Taking part in the service with be the Waynesburg VFW Post No. 4793; James E. Farrell American Legion Post No. 330; and the DAV Chapter 123 of Waynesburg.
The Filer-Sadlek Post No. 954 of Jefferson will have services:
• At 11 a.m., a service will be held at the Mather Honor Roll/Post Office with Pastor Carl Leipold of the Clarksville Missionary Church as speaker. It will be followed with a salute to the deceased and placement of the wreath at the Honor Roll.
• At 11:30 a.m., a service will be held at the Jefferson Cemetery with a salute to the deceased and wreath placement at the Honor Roll.
• At 11:45 a.m., a service will be held at the veterans’ section at Greene County Memorial Park, with a salute to the deceased and wreath placed at the base of the American Flag.
The James R. Maxon American Legion Post No. 992 of Mt. Morris will have the following services:
• At 10 a.m., a service will be held at Mt. Morris United Methodist Church.
• At 11 a.m., a parade will be held from the Mt. Morris United Methodist Church to Dunkard Creek where there will be a salute to the deceased and the throwing of a flower into the creek in memory of the U.S. Navy veterans.
•At noon, ceremonies will be held at the Cedar Grove Cemetery, with the speaker to be announced later. It will be followed by the placement of the wreath in honor of our deceased at the monument. An honor guard and firing squad will participate in the ceremony.
