There is good news for drivers who used to travel Sheffield Street across Interstate 70 at the Jessop Place exit in Canton Township.

Work to replace the span is four to six weeks ahead of schedule, said Jeff Corazzi, project manager for the state Department of Transportation.

Seven beams were set across the westbound lanes Tuesday night. Beams were set over the eastbound lanes Wednesday night.

“I talked with the contractor, and they are optimistic that the project will finish ahead of schedule,” Corazzi said.

The bridge was originally scheduled to be done Nov. 1. The span was closed in early March and demolished later that month. The original bridge was built in 1960. It is being replaced by two, 24-foot-wide lanes with 8-foot shoulders on either side.

Golden Triangle Construction of Imperial is the contractor for the $1.7 million project.

Corazzi said both the westbound and eastbound lanes will be closed tonight. The westbound lanes will be closed at 8 p.m., and, when that is done, work will switch to the eastbound lanes. The road will be reopened by 6 a.m. Traffic will be detoured off the highway at the Jessop exit and then back onto the highway from the entrance ramp.

The highway also will be closed the night of May 23 so pans can be installed between the beams in anticipation of installing rebar.
