Miss Riverfest pageant set for Saturday
RICES LANDING – Seventeen contestants will compete Saturday in the Miss Riverfest pageant with the winners reigning over the Rices Landing Riverfest June 7 and 8 at the Rices Landing lock wall.
The pageant and Riverfest are returning this year following about an eight-year hiatus, and are being organized by the Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Co., the Rices Landing community and Rices Landing Boy Scouts. The event is sponsored in part by Alpha Natural Resources.
The pageant will get under way at 2 p.m. and will be held in the auditorium at Jefferson-Morgan High School.
The pageant is for girls ages 4 to 18 who will compete for the titles of Tiny Miss Riverfest, ages 4 and 5; Petite Miss Riverfest, ages 6 to 8; Junior Miss Riverfest, ages 9 and 10; Teen Miss Riverfest, ages 11 to 13; and Miss Riverfest 2013, ages 14 to 18.
Participants will compete in beauty, talent, photogenic and sportswear. One queen will be selected in each division, as well as a runner up. The winners will appear at the Riverfest festivities, as well as parades and other appearances throughout the year. Brittney Giovanelli is the pageant director.
A full slate of activities has been scheduled for the two-day Riverfest.
On June 7, gates will open at 4 p.m. Activities include: blacksmith demonstrations at 4 p.m.; opening remarks at 5:45; the country music band Ruff Creek at 6; the Justin Fabus Band at 8; and The Hillbilly Way band at 9:30.
On June 8, the Mon Paddle will be at 10 a.m. and gates will open at noon. Activities include: blacksmith demonstrations at noon; Miss Riverfest Performances at 2 p.m.; the rock band Hit n’ Run at 6; the rock band Two Thumps Up at 9.; and fireworks at 9:45.
More than 20 local food and craft vendors are expected to participate in Riverfest. A petting zoo and games will be available for children. Blacksmith demonstrations will be held at the W.A. Young & Sons Foundry.
On Friday, admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. On Saturday, admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children.
Advance Friday tickets can be purchased at Caputo’s Bar in Dry Tavern, Grandma’s Attic in Waynesburg, Tera Shashura’s Hair and Nails in Rices Landing and from any Rices Landing fireman.
