Commissioners issue proclamations

2 min read

Greene County Commissioners Thursday proclaimed May as Older Americans month.

The proclamation acknowledges Greene County citizens who are age 60 or older and who continue to contribute experience, knowledge, wisdom and accomplishments. The proclamation also encourages county residents to emphasize the importance of elders and their leadership by publicly recognizing their continued achievements and their value in strengthening communities.

The 2013 Senior Games will be held June 19 on the campus of Charleroi Area School District, and the 2013 Senior Expo will be held Oct. 4 at the Greene County Fairgrounds.

This year is the 50th anniversary of proclaiming May as Older Americans Month, and representatives from Community Action Southwest and Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging Inc. accepted the proclamation. State Sen. Tim Solobay presented the two organizations and the commissioners with citations thanking them for their support of senior programs.

Also, as part of the Mental Health Awareness Month proclamation, the commissioners recognized county housing outreach specialist Zabryna Karnes, who recently received a Leadership in Recovery award from Value Behavioral Health of Pennsylvania Inc.

Presented to individuals actively engaged in their journey toward recovery, the Leadership in Recovery award honors those who have demonstrated outstanding courage, creativity, leadership and inspiration to others on the path to greater physical and mental well-being, according to the VBH-PA website.

The six recipients from Southwestern Pennsylvania were recognized April 19 in Pittsburgh. Karnes was one of eight nominees from Greene County.
