MAPLETOWN – Mapletown High School will hold commencement for 39 members of the Class of 2013 in the school’s gymnasium at 7 p.m. May 30.

Rocco Scalzi, a former Altoona Pennsylvania police officer and founder of Beating the Odds Foundation, will be the guest speaker.

During Scalzi’s rookie year as a police officer, he experienced a tragic incident that turned his life around, led him to create the foundation and also to speak at high schools.

Back in 1965, at his own elementary school at an assembly, he learned the power of a dream.

Scalzi’s speech is titled “Perseverance,” and will portray the message of focusing on ones dreams and making them happen with hard work.

Sarah E. Ferrier will deliver the valedictorian’s address, and Taylor Kennison will deliver the salutatorian’s address.

Ferrier, daughter of David and Cassandra Ferrier of Greensboro, will attend Bethany College and major in premedical/biology. She hopes to become a neurologist.

She was president of student council, president of the senior class, vice president of National Honor Society, and varsity volleyball captain. She received several awards, including the scholar/athlete of the year award for Mapletown, the Karon Leadership Award of Bethany College and is an inductee to the Sports Hall of Fame of 2013 for Washington/Greene County.

Kennison, son of Beverly Rife of Dilliner and Richard Kennison of Smithfield, will attend West Virginia University where he will major in physical therapy.

He was a member of the Academic League, the varsity football team and the varsity baseball team. He received the award of Herald Standard Scholar Athlete in 2012.
