Liberty Tunnel work begins tonight
Demolition work on the south portal arch of the Liberty Tunnel in Pittsburgh will begin tonight with a closure starting two hours after the Pittsburgh Pirates game through 6 a.m. Saturday.
The outbound side will also close two hours after the Pittsburgh Penguins game Saturday night through 6 a.m. Sunday and from 10 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday.
The inbound will close from 10 p.m. tonight to 5 p.m. Saturday. It will close again two hours after the Penguin game through 6 a.m. Monday.
Detours will be posted. Motorists are advised to consider alternate routes.
The $18.8 million project includes repair of structural concrete, updating and repair of electrical, lighting and safety systems, refurbishing of the portal buildings and other improvements. The prime contractor is the Swank Construction Company. Overall work will conclude this fall.
The tunnels were built in 1924. Approximately 45,000 vehicles use the tunnels on an average day.
