Man jailed in scrap metal theft
A Monongahela man is in the Washington County jail on $100,000 bond after police said he was apprehended trying to steal scrap copper and other items from a Monongahela scrap yard Wednesday morning.
Gregory Hetrick, 24, of 576 Park Way, Apt. 1, Monongahela, was taken into custody by Monongahela police after a brief foot chase.
Police were called about 7 a.m. to Pitt-Mon Salvage Yard, 200 Stockdale Ave., for a report of a burglary in process, said Chief Brian Tempest. He said Hetrick was seen running from the scrap yard. An all-terrain vehicle also was found parked near the yard.
Tempest said piles of copper wiring and air-conditioning conduits were found in a duffle bag.
“He had it packed and ready to remove the items,” Tempest said.
Hetrick was arraigned before District Judge Mark Wilson on charges of attempted burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia.
