Corbly reunion announced

2 min read

The 82nd reunion of John Corbly Descendants Association will be held at Corbly Baptist Church in Garards Fort June 30.

A worship service will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the association meeting will begin about 10:30 a.m. A lunch will be served at the church following the meeting.

The Rev. John Corbly established the church and 30 other Baptist churches in early settlements throughout Western Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia (West Virginia) between 1770 and 1800. His homestead was near Garards Fort, where he lost his second wife and three children during an Indian raid in 1782. He served in the militia during the U.S. War for Independence and was one of three justices appointed for Greene County. His strong stance for free speech and no taxation without representation led to his arrest during the Whiskey Rebellion. After a forced march to Philadelphia, he was pardoned and returned to Greene County. Corbly was married three times (Abigail Kirk, Elizabeth Tyler, Nancy Lynn) and had 17 children.

Items for discussion at the reunion will be the Corbly website, his involvement in the Revolutionary War and his Greene County land.

Information on Corbly’s life and descendants will be available. Attendees will be encouraged to share genealogy research.

The event is open to the public. Anyone interested in Corbly and the Garards Fort area is encouraged to attend. For reservations, email William Miller, at billkathymiller@yahoo.com or call 724-627-7129.
