Events scheduled to honor veterans
Communities throughout Greene County will honor the men and women who served in the country’s armed services with parades and special ceremonies.
The Greene County Veterans Day Parade in Waynesburg will be a 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 and will be followed by a ceremony at the Greene County Courthouse.
The parade marshal will be Paul Crayne, a 100-year-old veteran of World War II.
Before the start of the parade, two songwriters, Taylor Krebs and Jason Deutsch will perform at the courthouse. The two are co-sponsored by the Veterans Affairs Office and Little White Garage, an artist development company.
A parade and program will be held in Jefferson Monday, Nov. 11. The parade will form at 9:45 a.m. at the Jefferson Fire Hall, then march through town, stopping to conduct a 21-gun salute at 10:45 a.m. in front of the Jefferson American Legion Post.
The parade wilI then proceed to the Jefferson-Morgan High School for a program that will begin at about 11:30 a.m. in the Stanley Fowler Auditorium.
The speaker will be Thomas Shumaker, past western vice commander for the Department of Pennsylvania American Legion. Following the program, the Post Everlasting ceremony will be held with the reading of the names of the veterans who have died in the past year. A parade and program also will be held in Carmichaels on Monday, Nov. 11 by the Carmichaels American Legion Post No. 400.
The parade will assemble about 10:30 a.m. in the Yoskovich Funeral Home parking lot and proceed to the town square, where there will be a tribute to all veterans with a 21-gun salute and taps. Those in attendance will then walk to the post for a short presentation and lunch.
On Sunday, Nov. 10, the Rogersville United Methodist Church will hold a Veterans Day program during its 11:15 a.m. worship service. Readings will be presented and all veterans present will be recognized.
