Municipal election results: second tie, several incumbents defeated
Here’s one for the odds-makers: What are the chances of a tie occurring twice between two candidates in an election contest?
Tim Doman and Bob Buchanan had the same number of votes in the primary when one person was to be nominated as Buffalo Township supervisor.
In June, the men drew numbers as a tie-breaker, and because Doman prevailed, his name was included on the ballot.
In Tuesday’s general election, Buchanan conducted a write-in campaign. According to unofficial results, he received 190 votes and so did Doman.
A total of 193 Buffalo Township voters wrote in names, but not all were for Bob Buchanan.
A formal count of Buffalo Township’s six absentee ballots will begin Thursday morning, and the Washington County canvass board will have to determine if any provisional ballots should be counted and for whom.
Several incumbent municipal officials were defeated in their re-election efforts Tuesday, while a number of others were elected to new terms.
Incumbent South Strabane Township Supervisor Tom Moore was defeated in by Democrat Marie Laynee Zipko.
In North Franklin Township, Democrat Ron Junko defeated Republican Mike Quinn and independent Alex Migyanko, an incumbent, for a six-year term as supervisor, and Democrat Martha Ward defeated Migyanko for a four-year term on the board.
California Borough will have a new mayor as Walter R. Weld Jr. defeated a write-in campaign for the office with 53.7 percent of the votes.
Republican incumbent North Strabane Township Supervisor Robert Balogh defeated Democrat Bill Brooks and independent Neil Kelly to win another six-year term. Balogh also won a two-year term over the two challengers. He will have to choose one position.

Incumbent Nottingham Township Supervisor Peter Marcoline Jr. defeated Democratic challenger W. Lee Schafer to win another six-year term, while in Union Township, Republican Charles Trax Jr. defeated Democrat Ed Frye for a six-year term.
