Peace poster winners recognized
WAYNESBURG – Emma Jones, a seventh-grade student at Margaret Bell Miller Middle School, took the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning the local Peace Poster contest sponsored by the Waynesburg Lions Club.
Approximately 30 students in Colby Love’s and Kristen Venturino’s art classes at MBM participated in the competition this year.
Eleanor Chapman from Waynesburg Lions Club, along with Brian Uplinger, superintendent of Central Greene School District, Justin Stephenson, assistant principal of MBM, and John Lipscomb, principal of MBM, judged the posters.
The posters were evaluated on the three criteria: Originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme, “Our World, Our Future.”
Many of the posters are on display in the window at First Federal Savings and Loan in Waynesburg.
The top three winners will advance to the district level of competition to be judged Nov. 23.
These three posters are among the more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 26th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest.
Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people.
One grand prize winner and 23 merit awards will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations.
The 23 merit award winners each receive a certificate and cash award of $500.
