WAYNESBURG – The Family Literacy Program and the children’s department at the Eva K. Bowlby Public Library is celebrating International Game Day by hosting an After Hours Family Game Night from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.

There will lots of good old-fashioned game playing for every member of the family. Families are also encouraged to bring their favorite games to share with others at the event.

Keeping with tradition, the library will be offering its sixth annual turkey bowling event. Local teenagers are also invited to a special After-After Hours from 8 to 10 p.m. at the library.

Dale Lipschultz with the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services in Chicago, said, “School children love playing traditional board games like Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders, and through play they learn to take turns and cooperate while developing early literacy skills … memory and matching board and computer games help preschoolers move from spoken language to print.”

Former American Library Association president Jim Rettig also pointed out that “games of every type play an important role in developing fundamental competencies for life. They require players to learn and follow complex sets of rules, make strategic and tactical decisions, and, increasingly, collaborate with teammates and others – all things they will have to do in college and in the workforce.”

Individuals and families can register for this event by calling the library at 724-627-9776.
