Bridge to be renamed in honor of general

1 min read

The Route 88 bridge that connects Washington and Greene counties over Ten Mile Creek will be renamed in honor of a U.S. Marine veteran from Fredericktown.

The state House unanimously approved Senate Bill 546, sponsored by Sen. Tim Solobay, D-Canonsburg, to rename the bridge the “Lieutenant General William M. Keys Bridge.”

Lt. Gen. Keys, who was born in Fredericktown, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and the National War College. He served as a company commander in Vietnam and commanding general of more than 20,000 Marines during Operation Desert Storm, according to a news release. He retired in 1994.

Throughout his 34-year career, he received numerous awards, including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat “V” and two Distinguished Service medals.

Senate Bill 546 is a parallel effort to House Bill 1002, introduced by state Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson.
