HYDETOWN, Pa. (AP) — Two men riding in an off-road vehicle on a state highway in northwestern Pennsylvania were killed in a head-on crash when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle.

State police said Saturday the crash occurred at 6:50 p.m. Friday on state Route 8 outside Hydetown in Erie County.

Police said the victims, both from Titusville, were in an off-road vehicle known as a “side by side” because of its seating configuration. Trooper Adam Haun says it’s illegal to drive such vehicles on public highways except to cross them.

The driver, 22-year-old Devon Beach, was flown to a hospital in Erie, where he later died. His passenger, 23-year-old Ryan Rose, was declared dead at the scene.

The 70-year-old driver of the other car was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
