4 Pa. govs urge passage of transportation plan
HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett and his three most recent predecessors are calling on Pennsylvania lawmakers to set aside partisan differences and pass a transportation funding bill.
Former governors Ed Rendell, Mark Schweiker and Tom Ridge joined Corbett in making the appeal Saturday.
They said providing ample funding for transportation needs is essential to Pennsylvania’s economy and the safety of its 12 million residents. They said current funding is inadequate to for a transportation system with 9,000 miles of crumbling roadway, 4,500 structurally deficient bridge and mass transit agencies struggling to make ends meet.
Lawmakers are weighing competing funding proposals, and a House vote appears likely as early as Monday but it remains unclear which proposal lawmakers might favor.
