Peters Twp. police investigating phone scam
McMURRAY – A resident of the 200 block of Thompsonville Road notified Peters Township police of a telephone call he received from a man claiming to be a legal aid attorney regarding an accident involving the man’s grandson and a couple from Paraguay. The caller knew the grandson’s name, police said.
The caller, who called himself an attorney, asked the man to send about $2,000 as the Paraguayan couple were injured. As instructed, the McMurray man wired the money to Paraguay. Police said it is not known where the alleged accident occurred or if the grandson was in Paraguay.
The man from McMurray called police at 3:21 p.m. Wednesday to report the incident.
While police were at the residence taking the man’s statement, his telephone rang and it was the alleged attorney calling. In that telephone call, the man asked for another $1,600 to ensure the couple would not file a lawsuit. That’s when the McMurray man handed the telephone to the police officer, who immediately identified himself.
The caller hung up. Police continue to investigate.
