2,000 Turkeys campaign kicks off
Thanksgiving is weeks away, and most Washington County residents will celebrate the day with a traditional dinner and family.
Unfortunately, more than 5,400 low-income families in Washington County are struggling to put food on their tables every day.
2000 Turkeys kicked off its annual campaign Friday to provide a holiday dinner for Washington County neighbors who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. The Washington County Food Bank has established qualification guidelines for families who receive the Thanksgiving dinners.
“Every year, we hope that we’ll get put out of business and that there’s no need for 2000 Turkeys, but that’s not the case this year,” said David Rhome, a member of the 2000 Turkeys board.
The campaign got under way with a $2,500 donation from Washington Blue Knights Chapter 16, which raised money for local charities at its 10th annual Blue Ride held in July.
“We’re always glad to be a part of 2000 Turkeys,” said ride chairman Dave Richards, who presented the check at WJPA radio station.
Richards noted that the Blue Knights’ efforts are part of a huge, communitywide effort to provide Thanksgiving dinner for those less fortunate.
Range Resources community relations specialist Andrea Cooper also presented a check for $2,000 on behalf of the company.
2000 Turkeys began in 1983 as a seasonal food campaign to help the unemployed, and has grown into an annual tradition for individuals, companies, schools and organizations looking to help those in need celebrate the holiday. Every $10 raised provides a Thanksgiving dinner for a family of four.
2000 Turkeys is the largest single fundraiser on behalf of the Food Bank and its neighboring pantries.
