Thieves steal metal from trail bridge

1 min read

WANAMI (AP) – Authorities say thieves have been targeting a bike trail bridge for metal, using a torch to remove it in small pieces.

The Wilkes-Barre Times Leader reported Saturday that someone called the nonprofit Earth Conservancy early Friday to report seeing the crime in progress.

The narrow bridge over a ravine is about a quarter mile from a trail head on the Penobscot Ridge Mountain Bike Trail in Wanamie.

The bridge is considered safe to cross, as structural supports haven’t been removed or damaged.

The trail is remote and has seen similar thefts in the past. It’s been open for eight years, and the bridge was added in 2008.

Police said they have no leads, and the Earth Conservancy is offering a reward for information leading to a conviction.
