Renovated senior highrise on display Wednesday

2 min read

The public can get a good look at the new-look Liberty Tower Highrise for the Elderly.

A dedication and open house will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the renovated facility at 520 Liberty St., California.

It is an eight-story, 104-unit structure for people who are at least age 62 or have a disability.

Federal, state and local officials will attend the event, focusing on a $2 million facelift that was finished in July.

It is the most ambitious upgrade undertaken at Liberty Tower, which was developed by the Washington County Redevelopment Authority and opened in June 1981.

Many features are new, according to the redevelopment authority.

They include: the roof; rooftop HVAC equipment; lightning protection system; kitchen cabinets and countertops; kitchen and bathroom vinyl floors; HVA units for all apartments; gas hot-water tanks and trash compactors.

Handicap accessibility in public restrooms has been improved, along with energy efficiency throughout the building.

Waller Corp. of Washington did the construction. Gerard Associates Architects LLC of Pittsburgh was the designer.

Funding came from the Federal Housing Administration 223(f) loan program, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Kitchen cabinets, ranges and refrigerators removed from the highrise were donated to Washington County Habitat for Humanity on East Maiden Street, Washington.

The items are for sale, below retail prices, at the Habitat’s Restore, a nonprofit home-improvement store and donation facility.
