Two men accused of burglarizing a North Franklin Township restaurant in June waived their cases to Washington County Court Wednesday.

Joseph David Boone, 20, of 1150 Fayette St., Washington, and Jason Alexander Carpenter, 20, of 25 Midland Road, Canton Township, were charged by North Franklin police in the June 9 break-in at Angelo’s restaurant, 2109 North Franklin Drive.

Both men had been scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Robert Redlinger. Boone was charged with three counts each of burglary, criminal trespass and theft. Carpenter faces single counts of burglary, criminal trespass and theft. Surveillance shows the restaurant being entered three different times. On two occasions, only one person entered, but the third time two burglars entered the building and removed a large safe they had placed in a garbage can.

Township police Detective Dean Urbanic said he learned of Boone’s involvement several days after the burglary when an informant reported hearing Boone and Carpenter bragging about robbing the restaurant.

Police later recovered two safes, fire extinguishers and personal papers of Michael Passalacqua, the owner of the restaurant, along with gift cards in a dead-end area of North Buffalo Church Road in Buffalo Township. Police later obtained a search warrant for a storage barn in Canton Township, where they said they recovered a laptop computer and eight zip drives that had been stolen from the restaurant.

Boone and Carpenter also were charged by state police with burglarizing Shorty’s restaurant and trying to break into Chuck’s Archery that same night. The two businesses are in the same plaza at 2301 Jefferson Ave., Canton.

In that case, Boone waived a hearing on two counts of burglary and one count each of criminal trespass and criminal mischief during a preliminary hearing Aug. 21 before District Judge David Mark. Carpenter awaits a preliminary hearing on identical charges before Mark Sept. 18.

Boone remains in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond. Carpenter is free on bond.
