Boiler at power station shut down
The boiler at Mitchell Power Station in Union Township unexpectedly shut down Thursday, causing a concentration of flue gas to exit the industrial stack.
Stephanie Thornton, senior communications representative of FirstEnergy Corp., which runs the coal-fired power plant, said there were no injuries and no threat to the public.
The boiler stopped functioning at 1 p.m., and the unit will remain offline until the cause is determined by an ongoing investigation. There were no customer outtages caused by the incident.
FirstEnergy Corp. announced it will be closing the Mitchell Power Station, in addition to Hatfield’s Ferry Power Station in Greene County, next month due to the high cost of bringing it into compliance with Environmental Protection Agency standards.
