Rep. Snyder to host energy hearing

2 min read

State Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, will serve as host of a wide-ranging House Democratic Policy Committee hearing on energy from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Monday in the social hall of the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company, 1483 Jefferson Road, Jefferson.

“The committee will consider the full spectrum of energy concerns, including prices, outlooks and trends,” Snyder said. “Every facet of energy policy – coal, natural gas, renewable energy – will be fair game, but I think the threatened shutdown of local coal-fired power plants will be a prime subject.”

Following is the tentative list of those scheduled to testify:

• George Ellis, president, Pennsylvania Coal Alliance

• James Laurita, Jr., president/CEO, MEPCO, Inc.

• Andrew Place, executive director, Center for Sustainable Shale Development, and corporate director of energy and environmental policy, EQT Corp.

• Lloyd Blaker, owner, R. M. Manufacturing Sales & Service, Inc.

• Jason Foster, president, C&J Welding

• Blair Zimmerman, Greene County commissioner

• John Walliser, Esq., vice president/legal and governmental affairs, Pennsylvania Environmental Council

• Ed Yankovich, International District 2 vice president, United Mine Workers of America; and

• Andrew Sinclair, employee, Hatfield Ferry Power Station.

“Great headway has been made getting out the facts about the harms that the proposed closures of the Hatfield Ferry and Mitchell power stations will have on the region’s economy and the reliability of the power grid for the entire northeastern United States,” Snyder said. “The hearing will amplify those concerns with expert testimony.”

FirstEnergy Corp. announced in July that it planned to close the Hatfield Ferry Power Station in Greene County and the Mitchell Power Station in Washington County in October. About 380 positions at the plants would be affected as well as thousands of other jobs linked to the facilities.

The plants produce 2,080 megawatts, or about 10 percent of the FirstEnergy’s generating capacity.
