GE looks to retirements for some job cuts in Erie

1 min read

ERIE (AP) – General Electric is exploring how many layoffs at its century-old Erie locomotive plant could be offset by retirements.

The Erie Times-News reported Saturday that the company sent a letter to employees laying out retirement options and asking them to plan quickly.

GE is Erie County’s largest employer.

Next Friday is the deadline for employees to submit paperwork.

Officials at Local 506 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America have previously estimated that about 140 workers might be eligible to retire now.

The company told the union earlier this month that up to 500 employees could get layoff notices in the next 60 days. It warned in April that slowing orders and productivity problems could lead to the elimination of 100 management and 950 union jobs there.
