Drivers traveling through Washington in the area of Murtland and Ridge avenues have likely noticed that work on the next phase of the Route 19 corridor project has begun in earnest.

And they are likely to see more work later this week, as the lane shifts will be extended along Ridge to Central Avenue Thursday.

“Right now, we have a lane shift from Erie Street to the state police barracks,” said Scott Faieta, assistant construction engineer for the state Department of Transportation.

“They are working on new curbs, sidewalks and doing a little widening. But it seems to be working well.Traffic is moving smoothly.”

The work will continue in that area as the shift slides south toward Central.

The lane shifts will end Nov. 1. Some work may still be done in the area, weather permitting, said Steve Zottola of Zottola Construction, the contractor doing the work. He said any work during winter months would be limited to 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Work to demolish three buildings in that area, including the former Highland Bar and Grill, is still awaiting the results of asbestos testing.

“If we get results on that, you may see demolition later this month or early next month,” Faieta said.

The bulk of the work on the project will occur during the 2014 construction season. A detour will be set up on Locust between Sumner and Gibson avenues.

Faieta said work on the College Street portion of the project remains on schedule top be completed by the end of October.
