Graveside ceremony to honor NY hero WWII pilot

1 min read

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) – A ceremony is set at a western New York cemetery to honor a hero World War II fighter pilot who died in the crash of his experimental plane during a stateside air show just months after returning home.

A POW medal will be presented to the family of Capt. William Glasgow and a special marker unveiled during Saturday morning’s ceremony at his gravesite in Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls.

Glasgow flew 80 missions in Europe, where he was shot down but managed to escape. In May 1945, his Curtiss P-55 crashed during an air show in Dayton, Ohio, narrowly missing grandstands packed with tens of thousands of spectators.

Glasgow was killed along with four people in a car hit by burning fuel from his plane. A 5-week-old girl in the car survived.
