Canton fire ruled arson

1 min read

The state police fire marshal has ruled a fire early Wednesday that damaged a concrete block garage in Canton Township was deliberately set.

Canton volunteer firefighters were called to the garage of William Miller, 50 Point View Drive, about 12:45 a.m. Fire Chief Dave Gump said the fire apparently started in a rack of four tires outside the building. The fire then spread to the roof.

“The fire was just starting to burn through to the rafters on the inside, but we were able to knock it down quickly,” Gump said.

Miller told Gump and the state police fire marshal he had just left the building about midnight. He also said the a vehicle had been damaged a few days before the fire. A friend of Miller’s went to check the building and discovered the fire.

No injuries were reported. Washington and North Franklin Township firefighters assisted at the scene.
